When in Rome

Be transported to the ancient streets of Rome and the canals of Venice as the Adelaide Italian Festival arrives this November. The 10-day open access festival includes free and ticketed events across metro and regional South Australia, from music, food and wine, art and stylish Italian-made cars. A new hub on the Festival Plaza will be a starting point as you travel to more than 60 Italian-inspired events across the state. “The special thing about the Adelaide Italian Festival is that even if you don’t have an Italian background, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy all of the fantastic things that our culture has to offer – whether you’re into food and wine, soccer, motorcars, cycling, dancing and music – there is truly something for everyone,” says Adelaide Italian Festival chair Tania Milohis. Highlights include the Journey Mass – a celebration of the Italian migrant community in South Australia – and La Grande Vita, a family-friendly festival in the Barossa Valley featuring local food, wine, entertainment, cycling and Italian festivities.

Aria of expertise

Spend an evening in the Scottish Highlands as State Opera South Australia brings its latest production, Lucia di Lammermoor, to Her Majesty’s Theatre from November 8 to 16. This 18th-century bel canto opera by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti is based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott. It tells the story of the emotionally fragile Lucia, who is torn between love and loyalty to her family, ultimately testing her mental stability. This opera is directed by Laura Hansford and stars Emma Pearson as Lucia, Morgan Pearse as Enrico and Alok Kumar as Edgardo. The performers will be accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, which will be led by acclaimed Spanish conductor Lucía Marín. This is the first production of Lucia de Lammermoor by State Opera South Australia in 30 years and only the second in the company’s history.
