FEATURE LISTING: Melded masterpiece at Medindie

Transforming an 1880s villa on a steep block is no easy task, but owner-renovators Alastair and Toni McLachlan have crafted the perfect blend of classic and modern architecture at Medindie.

Alastair and Toni McLachlan are selling their 1880s villa, which they have lovingly renovated and extended in spectacular fashion since purchasing the address in 2016.

The couple had been interested in The Avenue at Medindie for decades, so when the property at number nine came on the market, they jumped at the opportunity.

The property needed a lot of work, but Alastair and Toni saw that as part of the appeal.

Working together in everything from operating their juice manufacturing business, Preshafruit, to renovating homes together, Alastair and Toni knew what they were getting themselves into.

“This is the 14th renovation we have done, so we have a pretty good idea of what works and how to make a house into a really warm, family home,” Alastair says.

When approaching the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home, it is impossible not to be drawn in by its spectacular facade – the eye is drawn to the classic 1880 villa before sweeping to the effortlessly sympathetic modern extension.

“The screen we used on the extension relays back to the original lacework on the villa,” Toni says. “We have crafted ever so subtle resemblances through the connecting points that ensure its flow.”

The home is surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens designed by landscape architect Bethany Williamson that complements the outdoor entertaining pavilion, pool, spa and tennis court.

The home’s interior features brilliantly crafted contemporary living areas for the whole family to enjoy alongside secluded wings where the bedrooms are located for privacy.

“We built a wing off to one side that is a ‘parents’ wing’ and the children have their rooms in a separate area with their own ensuites so they can live independently,” Alastair says.

The master bedroom boasts elevated views of the Adelaide Hills and a variety of luxurious additions such as a walk-in-robe with floor-to-ceiling mirrored cupboards and an ensuite featuring dual showers, dual basins and heated floors and towel racks.

Complementing the master bedroom is a private living wing with a gas fireplace and windows overlooking the pool and manicured gardens.

The open-plan living space is the perfect space to spend time as a family and entertain groups both small and large.

Designed by Walls Bros, the substantial kitchen and butler’s pantry offer high-end Miele appliances set against striking American oak panelling.

“I love the stained American oak panelling we have used,” Toni says. “To provide a consistent flow through the home we have used American oak cabinetry in the kitchen, the bathrooms and the living areas.”

The couple has hosted more than 330 people in their home at once, utilising the indoor living area and the outdoor entertaining pavilion.

“The outdoor living area is an all-weather space as there is heating so you can sit out there during winter,” Alastair says. “We actually spend a lot of time out there in the winter because with the deciduous trees you get magnificent views of the city.”

A true testament to Alastair and Toni’s hard work and dedication, the couple has left no stone unturned and the property is a timeless example of style and experience.

This house is absolutely complete,” Alastair says. “Everything has been done so it is ready for someone who doesn’t want to lift a finger.

“It has certainly been our most enjoyable project and the most enjoyable location to live.”

The sale is being handled by Jamie Brown of Booth Real Estate.
