This weekend, soak up the last of the FIFA Women's World Cup, continue on with SALA and watch as some of ballet's icons take to the stage.

FIFA FAN FESTIVAL

Get along to the FIFA Fan Festival at Festival Plaza to watch Australia take on Sweden on Saturday, August 19 as they battle for third place. Then on Sunday night, it’s the final between Spain and England. The Fan Festival is the perfect place to watch the FIFA Women’s World Cup matches live in a World Cup atmosphere, while also enjoying an exciting entertainment program that brings together the best of football, music, culture, eating, drinking and lifestyle. There’s a large screen to view the matches across the tournament, with hosts doing interviews and offering giveaways at half time. Enjoy cultural dance performances, DJs and live concerts by some of the biggest names in Australian music. Kids and adults will love the interactive activities, test your skills out at the reaction station or play a game of dartboard football at the mini pitch. Plus get a selfie with Tazuni, the official FIFA Women’s World Cup mascot. If you’re hungry, there will be a diverse offering of cuisines that represent some teams participating in the tournament, with a menu curated by local Adelaide chef, Callum Hann.

Speeding supercars

Hearts will race at The Bend Motorsport Park in Tailem Bend from August 18 to 20 as the OTR Supersprint returns with an action-packed weekend of motorsports. There will be no shortage of on-track action as, alongside the Repco Supercars Championship, there will be five support categories including Touring Car Masters and the S5000. On the Saturday night, Australian band The Choirboys will play live alongside the alternative rock artists Kingswood. It will be easy to keep the whole family entertained with the Silver Sharks aerial stunt show and an expanded family zone and karting championship.

A NIGHT OF JAZZ WITH JAZZMEIA HORN

Join three-time Grammy nominated, jazz sensation Jazzmeia Horn and the top graduating jazz musicians from the Elder Hall for an unforgettable night of performances on Friday, August 25. Based in New York City and enthused as one of the “most exciting young vocalists in jazz” by The New York Times and praised by prestigious publications such as The New Yorker, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Texas Monthly, Jazzmeia Horn is one of contemporary jazz’s finest voices. Having collected the top prizes at the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and the 2015 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition, Horn’s three albums A Social Call (2017), Love and Liberation (2019) and Dear Love (2021) were all nominated for Grammy Awards.

Three’s a charm

Three incredible artists are now exhibiting at BMGART until September 2. Nona Burden, Karen Genoff and Barbara Hanrahan proudly present painting, works on paper assemblages and prints that depict a range of ideas and creative works. “My work reflects an interest in ambiguities surrounding light, space and form. Beneath the surface of the image is something more to be seen, or discovered, providing an invitation to contemplate further,” explains Nona Burden. Karen adds, “As both mother and an artist your heart is divided between that supreme act of creation and also the devotion to creative practice. It is hard to conceive of the idea that one’s body can actually grow eyes, fingers, toes, lungs and beating heart. As mothers we truly ‘own the means of production’.”

BETWEEN US

There’s still time to see Gail Hocking’s solo exhibition Between Us at praxis ARTSPACE. On until August 26, the exhibition uses sculpture, ceramics, installation and sound, with Hocking rendering imagery of roots, breath, limbs, arteries and ice with an ambiguity that blurs the line between human and non-human forms. Within the exhibition, an immersive installation Standing at the Edge of Memory explores Hocking’s feelings of grief and loss for Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere (Franz Josef Glacier) – a site near her childhood home in Aotearoa (New Zealand) – as its ice perpetually melts. Conceived as her love song to the glacier, Hocking relates the weeping ice to the shedding of tears.

BALLET INTERNATIONAL GALA

The Ballet International Gala is at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday, August 20. The event brings some of the biggest names in ballet to the theatre, including Roberto Bolle and Melissa Hamilton. The ballet icons from companies such as The Royal Ballet, Teatro alla Scala and Astana Opera will grace the stage for one show only and perform a highlight reel of some of the most historical ballet pieces, from Diana and Acteon to Giselle, La Fille and La Bayadere.
