Mother’s Day fun run

The traditional Mother’s Day Classic fun run, which raises money for research into breast and ovarian cancers, returns to South Australia on Sunday, May 12. The main SA event – coinciding with Mother’s Day – will see participants run or walk either seven-kilometre or four-kilometre distances around Adelaide’s Pinky Flat. There will also be a regional fun run held in Mount Gambier. Since its inception in 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic has raised more than $4 million for breast cancer research across the country. If running isn’t your thing, Hurley Hotel Group is hosting special Mother’s Day events across their venues. You can also gift your mum the limited edition Mum’s Gin from Prohibition.

Something for the history buffs

History comes to life this month with the much-loved annual South Australian History Festival, returning to take over the state until May 31. The festival offers more than 500 events, from tours and talks to exhibitions, workshops and special events. The theme of this year’s event is “Power” and features a historic project Portraits in Power, in which photographer Jonathan VDK has photographed 100 South Australians whose portraits will be displayed on Stobie poles as a free exhibition across the state. The exhibition also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the uniquely South Australian invention. Another highlight of the festival is Front Yard Slide Shows: Billboards – a digital storytelling project in the streets of Unley.

Contemporary art

Halifax Street’s BMG Art gallery showcases the best of modern and contemporary Australian art. This May, the gallery will present an evocative exhibition featuring painting, photography and sculpture from artists Dana Kinter, Lisa Tomasetti and Georgina Mills. Dana Kinter creates art with diverse media and draws inspiration from Australian native flora and fauna, while Georgina Mills is a classically trained sculptor focusing on the nude form and Lisa Tomesetti is a visual artist and photographer whose work has been exhibited across the world. This exhibition opens on May 17 and closes on June 8.

Chamber music at Adelaide Town Hall

Experience the beauty of chamber music this weekend at Adelaide Town Hall. Chamber Music Adelaide is presenting four new compositions by South Australian composers in their ‘Perspectives’ concert series on May 10 and 11. The music crafted by composers Glyn Lehmann, Anne Cawrse, Jodie O’Regan and Nathan May places text and song at the heart of their compositions, which explore diverse themes and compositional approaches. The concert will also include music from across chamber music’s history. There is also the chance to hear pre-concert talks each evening, while secondary students are invited to the open rehearsal on Friday 10 May at 11:30am.
