What's On

Shore Break, Hahndorf Immersed and ACO

This weekend, immerse yourself in Hahndorf, head to the Space Theatre for Shore Break and watch Priscilla at the Piccadilly.

Unlock your creativity

Get your creative juices flowing for Hahndorf Immersed, as it brings more than 40 artisan events to the historic Adelaide Hills town until September 30. Formerly known as Hahndorf, Handmade, Handcrafted & Handpicked, this month-long festival features workshops, masterclasses and free events covering everything from artisan food and drinks to arts and crafts, fashion and history. Highlights include a sweet pretzel decorating class at The Haus, a spring bouquet masterclass with bubbles at Sidewood Estate, a pottery-making class at Hahndorf Academy, a guided tour of the historic Somerled Wines cellar door and an afternoon tea at The Ceders.

Rolling with the tides

Imagine growing up in a world devoid of human connection and meaning. This is the situation the protagonist of Shore Break finds himself in, before turning to the rhythm of the ocean for answers. Directed by Chelsea Griffith and Chris Drummond and presented by Brink Productions in partnership with the Adelaide Festival Centre, Shore Break is the debut play by Chris Pitman, who wrote and stars in the monodrama. The one-man show combines story-telling, poetry and a monologue performance. Shore Break takes to the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre stage until September 7.

Don’t fret it

The versatility of guitar will be on full display this month as the Adelaide Guitar Festival arrives in our UNESCO City of Music, so get planning. Highlights of this year’s festival include Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco Peña’s Requiem for the Earth, a solo recital with Chinese classical guitarist Xuefei Yang and South Korea’s Deion Cho and a performance with French-Korean duo Antoine Boyer and Australian guitarist Josh Meader. Presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre from September 12 to 29, the Adelaide Guitar Festival features the world’s finest guitar players from across Australia and the globe playing in styles ranging from classical to blues, rock, jazz, flamenco, country and more.

Mendelssohn meets Bach

Head to the Adelaide Hall Town next Tuesday, September 10 as virtuoso violinist Richard Tognetti leads the Australian Chamber Orchestra playing works from Mendelssohn and Bach. The concert will include performances of Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Illuminae, Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor, Felix Mendelssohn’s Octer and a newly commissioned work from young Adelaide composer Jakub Jankowski, which will be performed in its world premiere.

Jump on board the Priscilla

Jump on board this weekend for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, screened by the History Trust of South Australia to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. The film follows two drag queens and a transgender woman as they travel across outback Australia and perform their unique style of cabaret. This screening will help the History Trust in its mission to restore the historic Priscilla bus from the film. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert takes place at the Piccadilly on Sunday, September 8.
