Art with heart

In 2022, the Kaurna Women’s Art Collective was created by women with a strong relationship to Yartapuulti, known in English as Port Adelaide. This month, the collective will be presenting Sisters of Lartelare at Adelaide Contemporary Experimental, “a rich, multi-sensory exhibition aiming to open new understandings of Kaurna history’s stories, and culture connected to Yartapuulti-Port Adelaide”. This multi-sensory exhibition includes textile and native plant-based installations and is on display at ACE’s front gallery until October 19.

Make your way to JamFactory this weekend for Gabriella Bisetto’s exhibition, First Breath, Least Breath, Everything In Between, which is presented in conjunction with Chihuly in the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Gabriella is a prominent South Australian glass artist and lecturer at the University of South Australia’s School of Art. In this solo exhibition, Gabriella explores the themes of ageing, disease, transience and the way that changes to the human body can be translated through glass practice. This exhibition takes place until November 24.

Laughter is good for you

Get ready to laugh until your side hurts. Australian comedian Harley Breen heads to the Arkba Hotel in Fullarton on Thursday, October 10 to present Laughter is the Best of Meds in association with the Mental Health Coalition SA. The comedy night, also featuring some of Adelaide’s best comedians in Mickey D, Bobby Macumber, Josh Warrior and Kushi Venkatesh, is a high of events for Mental Health Month. The comedy night is being hosted by the hilarious Lori Bell.

Painting the big picture

Head to the David Roche Foundation House Museum this weekend for Salon des Refusés: the alternative Archibald Prize and Wynne Prize selection. The Australia-wide exhibition will feature 60 works entered into but not displayed at these prestigious completions. Works were selected for their quality, diversity, humour and experimentation, with 38 from the Archibald Prize for portraiture and 22 from the Wynne Prize for landscapes. This exhibition takes place until October 26.

Oktoberfest

Get ready for Oktoberfest as it comes to Adelaide this weekend. First held in the early 1800s, Oktoberfest has evolved into a festival that is celebrated across the globe, meaning you needn’t travel all the way to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest. Grab your lederhosen this Saturday and head to Pinky Flat on the River Torrens as Adelaide’s Oktoberfest in the Gardens brings the Bavarian sense of gemütlichkeit – cordiality – to the city, with German beers, wine ciders and food.

Food, glorious food 

Head to Victoria Square this weekend for the Halal Food Festival on October 4 and 5. Now in its second year, the festival showcases cuisine from more than 30 cultures including Afghan, Greek, Indian, Italian, Korean, Syrian and Turkish. Try a sumptuous Turkish gözleme or delicious Afghan kubli pulao rice.
