Premium SAHOMES: Hyde Park haven

Every thought and decision behind this warm family home is crystal clear.

Ben Calder had already renovated a few houses before he bought a rundown villa in Hyde Park in 2009. So, the financial advisor knew what he was doing when he undertook a complete renovation of the circa 1900 home on Opey Avenue.

The result is a spectacular and stylish four bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom home where contemporary living melds with traditional features to create a light-filled, modern home with nothing left to do but move in.

“I will be surprised if anyone walks into this house and says, ‘Why did they do this or that?’” Ben says. “There is thought behind every decision to create a comfortable, automated house that is just a great family home.”

Highlights include the formal and stylish sitting room at the top of the house, the master suite with walk-in robe and en suite, 3.5 metre ceilings throughout and the practical office area with in-built cabinetry, which is tucked away off the main living area but still close enough to all the action.

“I work from home a bit and it was a great way to get some privacy in the office but still be able to keep an eye on the kids or vice versa,” Ben says.

Another wow-factor is the renovated cellar, which is a showpiece in itself. It has wide, wooden steps, is well lit and can be easily seen through the glass balustrades.

The rear, open-plan extension is warm and inviting, featuring a gas fire which Ben says is so effective there’s almost no need for the ducted heating to be switched on. There’s also a good-sized butler’s pantry and plenty of storage. All of this overlooks the alfresco entertaining area and heated pool with glass fencing.

“My kids aren’t too precious, and they get in the pool almost all year ’round,” Ben says. “The pool and the backyard have just been great for the kids.”

There’s also a double garage with a workshop area and more storage, and integrated lighting and watering systems in both the back and front gardens.

“The amount of detail in this house is second to none,” says Ben. “Underneath the back yard is a huge concrete water tank, plumbed to the house. We just didn’t skimp on anything.

“The location is also amazing, close to King William Road, great schools and not far from the city. It’s a big home with a lot of privacy but it’s still in amongst so much action.”

The property is being handled by Klemich Real Estate agent Andrew Kuhlmann and offers close by 11am Wednesday, August 28 unless sold prior.
