This weekend, head to the Adelaide Showground for the Beer & BBQ Fest, or join in the Bastille Day festivities.
Australian Ballet, Bastille Day and Beer & BBQ Fest
Glittering ballet
The Australian Ballet will bring its latest production, Jewels, to the Adelaide Festival Centre from July 12 to 18 following acclaimed performances in Sydney, Melbourne and London. The abstract, plotless ballet was created in 1967 by the influential choreographer George Balanchine, with costumes designed by Barbara Karinska and featuring more than 18,000 hand-sewn jewels. Jewels is divided into three parts, each represented by a precious stone – emeralds, rubies and diamonds – and set to music by composers Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky respectively.
An illuminating piano performance
Head to Her Majesty’s Theatre next Thursday, July 18 for Dutch pianist Joep Beving’s immersive performance, Hermetism. Combining Joep’s evocative piano melodies and contemporary artist Boris Acket’s captivating kinetic sculptures, Hermetism promises to be “a space where music and visual art converge to spark wonder and introspection”. This performance explores the intricate connections between light and sound and invites the audience to partake in a collective sensory exploration. Hermetism is presented in collaboration between the Adelaide Festival Centre and Illuminate Adelaide.
Time to wine down
It’s just one week to go until Cellar Door Fest Winter Edit – a boutique version of the popular summer festival – brings warm notes and cool vibes to the heart of the CBD. Meet, taste and discover South Australia’s hottest food, wine and spirits under one roof while local musicians perform a live soundtrack for your tasting journey. Cellar Door Fest Winter Edit takes place at the Adelaide Convention Centre on July 19 and 20.
Beer, BBQ and rock ‘n’ roll
The Beer & BBQ Festival will make its way to the Adelaide Showground from July 12 to 14, for two jam-packed days of beer, barbecued food and live music. Bands the Australian Rock Collective (featuring members of Powderfinger, Spiderbait, You Am I and Jet), Bad//Dreems & Friends and Peter Combe and His Newspaper Mama Band are guaranteed to have you hitting the dancefloor. Meanwhile, there will be drinks provided by 60 emerging and established brewers, winemakers and distillers, various market stalls, and food options ranging from briskets to burgers.
It’s all French to me
It’s Bastille Day this weekend, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate. Venues across Adelaide will be celebrating France’s national day with French-themed events and specials. Head to the Adelaide Central Market for its festivities on Friday, July 12 and Saturday, 13 July, including a tour of the market en français, a cooking demonstration with Le Cordon Bleu and Smelly Cheese Co’s Valérie Henbest, a crêpe pop-up, a champagne bar, live music and roving entertainment. Meanwhile, French restaurant and bar La Louisiane will be hosting a Jazz Festival on Sunday, July 14, with an outdoor bar and stage featuring local jazz musicians and world-class food and beverages. Or pourquoi pas celebrate Bastille Day at the newly opened PARC Brasserie & Bar with their special dinner event, Vive La France!, on Saturday, July 13.
