Celebrating community, winter dining and cuttlefish diving

This weekend, warm up, wine and dine at Winter Weekends in the Market District, or take the plunge and go cuttlefish diving in Whyalla.

Winter warmers

Don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors – get along to the first night of Experience Adelaide’s Winter Weekends on Friday, June 2 in the Market District. Starting at 5pm and going late into the night, La Cumbia, Si Sea, Hotel Metro, Lot 10 Cucina and Super Bueno will host live performances from local musicians while the streets come to life with roaming performers and toasty fire pits.

Under the sea

Each year, the only known mass congregation of giant cuttlefish occurs at the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park in Whyalla – making it the perfect place to go diving this June. Snorkelling just metres from the shoreline, be guided by a marine expert from PureSA and explore this unique, underwater phenomenon as giant cuttlefish engage in their colourful tricks and antics. Wetsuits and snorkel gear are provided along with local meals to keep you fuelled throughout your underwater adventure.

A Saint’s life

Showing now until September 2 at The David Roche Foundation Museum in North Adelaide, the exhibition Arthur Boyd: The Life of Saint Francis displays 12 of the Australian artist’s 20 tapestries together for the first time. Curated by Museum Director Robert Reason, the exhibition features the tapestries alongside Boyd’s drawings, pastels and lithographs on loan from The National Gallery of Australia’s collection. Reason explains that through his work, Boyd delves into the psyche of Saint Francis and the monumental figure of the saint burns bright with spiritual light – sometimes hungry and devouring, other times soft and dreamlike in the company of his followers.

A century of impact

Rotary South Australia will host the Community Impact Expo and Celebration Dinner in Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide on Saturday, June 3. Celebrating 100 years, the Expo will feature keynote speakers discussing the future with a focus on change in the community, local and international responses and journeys of adversity and success. Exhibitors will take over the centre from 8.30am to 4.30pm before the celebration dinner from 6.30pm alongside the launch of a centenary project by the former Governor of South Australia, Hieu Van Le.

Heroes and villains

Polish your armour and charge your lightsabres as Oz Comic-Con returns to the Adelaide Showground on June 3 and 4. Check out some local talent at the Artist’s Alley before heading over to watch the Cosplay competitions and parades. There will be plenty of opportunities to partake in friendly and competitive gaming with console and PC gaming, tabletop gaming and a Just Dance stage. Adelaide’s special guests include American voice actor, Abby Trott; actor Emily Swallow, who is best known for her roles in Supernatural and The Mandalorian; and The Walking Dead actor, Juliana Harkavy.
