What’s On: Christmas markets, WNBL and sunflowers in bloom

There are plenty of opportunities to put your dancing shoes on this weekend in Adelaide with the Harvest Rock Festival, Amplifii Music Festival and more.

Lightning strikes

With a new coach, new home grounds, international imports and legendary captain Steph Talbot in the driver’s seat, Adelaide Lightning’s 2022-2023 WNBL season is going to be one to remember. In the first home game of the season, Adelaide Lightning will take on the Sydney Flames on Saturday, November 19 at Adelaide 36ers Arena.

Rock up

Harvest Rock Festival will be taking over Rymill and King Rodney parks on November 19 and 20 with a line up including Jack White, The Lumineers, Holy Holy and Angus & Julia Stone. Throughout the day, indulge in local food and beverages with Truck Town offering food trucks galore and the Arkhe and Friends Dining Experience bringing the heat of an open-flame restaurant to the festival scene. Whether you’re looking to spend the whole weekend in style or dance your socks off for one day only, there’s a selection of packages available to make sure you can experience the Harvest Rock Festival your way.

Here we go again

ABBA fans, get excited as Björn Again returns to Adelaide bringing ABBA’s timeless hits back to the stage in a sing-along, dance-along extravaganza with the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again 2022 tour. Performing at the Adelaide Festival Theatre on Friday, November 18, fans will celebrate the music of ABBA with glitzy ’70s costumes, on-stage antics and all the top hits from Waterloo and Fernando to Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! and Dancing Queen.

Seeking sunshine

Embrace the incoming summer sunshine and spend a day at Shimmering Pines Farm for the annual Sunflower Festival, held from November 20 to December 18. Spend the festival days walking the fields, perusing the artisan sunflower markets and picking sunflowers to take home.

Local artisans

Explore Workshop26, Kimba’s creative quarter; a melting pot of makers and micro-businesses, and find a selection of handcrafted artisan wares perfect for Christmas gifts. The Christmas Markets will be open on Saturday, November 19 with beautiful soaps, handmade ceramics, vintage treasures, hand-poured candles and garden décor lovingly made and displayed by Eyre Peninsula artisans.

Take a tour

On Sunday, November 20 join art historian Dr Georgina Downey at Carrick Hill House Museum for a guided tour through the décor and art collection where visitors will explore the house as a reflection of dual identities. Look into the Haywards’ British-Australianness, their Establishment-bohemian-ness, and their ease of negotiation between public and private pleasures. More than a personal and social history, the tour uses the artworks and décor in their collection to explore themes of taste, lifestyle and service.

Blossoming with fun

The Unley Spring Fling will bloom to life on Sunday, November 20 at the Unley Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens. Nurture your green thumbs with a series of free workshops where you can learn to care for fruit trees, bring good bugs to the garden and grow food in small gardens. Peruse market stalls and indulge in local drinks and food with plenty of food trucks cooking up a storm. While the kids enjoy nature crafts and giant games, sit back and relax to live music with DJ Ruby Chew spinning tunes throughout the day and a live performance by Germein at 11.30am.

Amplified experience

Head to the Playford Tennis Centre on Saturday, November 19 for the all-inclusive Amplifii Music Festival. Catering to all ages and abilities, Amplifii Music Festival will have all the fun of live music with the bonus of chill-out zones, AUSLAN interpreters and disability-aware security. Put your dancing shoes on to rock out at centre stage and get groovy to the silent disco, or hit up the photo booths and indulge in local eats with a selection of food trucks.
