What’s on: Mother’s Day celebrations, Bowerbird, Adelaide Food Fringe and more

Still have nothing planned for Mother’s Day? There’s plenty on offer around the state, as well as the inaugural Adelaide Food Fringe, the return of the Bowerbird Markets, and so much more.

MORNING TEA WITH BEC

Join Bec Hardy and her family for a special Mother’s Day celebration at her beautiful Tipsy Hill home in Blewitt Springs. Enjoy a morning tea in the picturesque gardens, which were recently open to the public as part of the Open Gardens SA program. There will be tea, a selection of petite sweets and savoury treats, as well a glass of the Bec Hardy Premium Sparkling NV on arrival.

G&TEA AT THE MARION

The Marion Hotel is hosting a special G&Tea party this Mother’s Day. There will be a range of sweet and savoury treats, unlimited tea and coffee and an Adelaide Hills 78 Degrees Gin & Tonic on arrival. Book your events now to secure a spot.

SPARKKE MOTHER’S DAY LUNCH

Take the family to Sparkke at the Whitmore this Sunday for a special Mother’s Day lunch. Sparkke is celebrating Mother’s Day with a four-course lunch at their award-winning restaurant, a beautiful hamper featuring Sparkke Spirits and the release of a new limited-edition gin. A special Mumosa cocktail or your choice of Sparkke Brew or bubbles will be handed out on arrival. For those who can’t make it into the pub, Sparkke have a special Mother’s Day Hamper filled with house made Sparkke indulgences.

SA SHOWCASE

Adelaide’s much-loved Bowerbird returns in 2021. Show your support for Australian designers and makers from around the country and celebrate handmade products. You’ll find something for everyone in the wide range of unique and beautifully crafted items. The three-day event will be held on May 7 to 9 in the Wayville Pavilion at Adelaide Showground.

THE FRINGE OF FOOD

The inaugural Adelaide Food Fringe is happening this May, with more than 100 events scheduled across South Australia. The nine-day open access food and drink festival celebrates South Australia’s spectacular food and beverage industry. There is a large program of events planned by restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, wineries, distilleries and more, from May 7 to 16.

WALK IN THEIR SHOES

Take part in the annual Pioneer Women’s Trail Walk on Sunday, May 16 and follow in the footsteps of pioneer women as they made the regular trek from their homes in Hahndorf to the market in Adelaide. Absorb the spectacular Adelaide Hills scenery as you wind your way through the hills to end your walk at Beaumont House for celebratory festivities. You can start the walk in Hahndorf, Bridgewater or Stirling. Registrations close midnight Sunday May 9.

CUTTING-EDGE OPERA

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is taking up residence at Her Majesty’s Theatre this month for a performance State Opera SA artistic director Stuart Maunder promises will be “deliciously scary; dark, sinister… and thrilling”. Maunder originally created the Sweeney Todd production for Victorian Opera and it went on to tour Australia and New Zealand. The six-show Adelaide season will see actor and singer Ben Mingay and soprano Antoinette Halloran reprise their roles as the murderous London barber and his partner-in-crime, pie shop owner Mrs Lovett.

A TOAST TO CHARDONNAY

This month will see the first ever Chardonnay May festival in the Adelaide Hills, with the festival set to become a regular calendar event. Throughout the month of May, wineries, restaurants and bottle shops across the Hills will honour the vibrant and versatile grape variety with tastings, paired dinners, promotions and immersive experiences. While away an Autumn afternoon in a cellar door, or settle in for an indulgent lunch at a favourite restaurant in the Hills or Adelaide CBD, pairing museum chardonnays with seasonal, local produce that make it sing.

CINEMATIC CELEBRATION

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will travel to Adelaide this Saturday, May 8 at the Capri Theatre. Showcasing a carefully curated selection of the best films from Canada’s famous nine-day international festival. The annual festival will feature eight unique and captivating films from adventures around the globe.
