Footy fanatics will flock to Adelaide this weekend for the Gather Round while the South Australian Landscape Festival opens the gates to some of our state's most meticulously designed gardens.
What’s On: AFL Gather Round, Barossa Airshow and seafood galore
Lovely landscapes
A collaboration between the Master Landscapers of SA and Open Gardens SA, the South Australian Landscape Festival opens the gates to some of South Australia’s professionally designed gardens to showcase local landscaping talent. On April 15 and 16, attendees can explore the gardens and learn from skilled professionals as they share their secrets, tips and tricks to garden design. Spend the weekend basking in unique gardens and find inspiration to take home and implement in your outdoor spaces.
Gather round
Footy lovers from across the country will unite in Adelaide for the AFL’s inaugural Gather Round, where every AFL team will play their Round 5 games at venues across South Australia. The round kicked off on Thursday, April 13, with the Crows taking on Carlton at Adelaide Oval under lights, followed by five more matches at the iconic stadium, with others being played at both Norwood Oval and Mount Barker’s Summit Sports Park. Port Adelaide will play its Gather Round night game against the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, April 15.
Flying high
Look up on Sunday, April 16 as the Barossa Airshow takes to the skies above the Rowland Flat Airfield. From 10am to 4pm, an eclectic group of aircraft will showcase daredevil tricks, group aerial performances and sky-high acrobatics. On the ground will be a range of food and beverage offerings, alongside a local market and historic vehicle exhibit. Pack your lawn chairs and enjoy a fun day out with the whole family.
Shell-ebration of seafood
Dive into a decadence of seafood at Sean’s Kitchen as it hosts Crab Carnival this month. Until April 29, the Sean’s Kitchen team will be dishing up seafood specials such as soft shell crab rolls, spanner crab linguini and blue swimmer macaroni and cheese. On Tuesday nights, indulge in Louisiana crab boil and on Thursday nights, turn up the heat with chilli mud crab. Sean Kitchen’s signature bloody Mary has also received a crabby twist for April, being served with an Alaskan crab leg.
Hear ye, hear ye
The Mount Gambier Showgrounds will be a picture of the past on April 15 and 16 as the Fantasy Medieval Fair returns. Historical re-enactments will see swordsmen, jousters and archers tout their talents, while artisans demonstrate their skills including flower weaving, and others will sell their wares. A tavern will flow mead and ale to the thirsty, while fantasy enthusiasts can create their own magical worlds at the Dungeons & Dragons tables.
Reel it in
Retrieve the rods and get the kids fishing these school holidays with the Rivoli Bay Jetties Junior Fishing Competition. Registrations and workshops will be held on Monday, April 17 with the competition kicking off that day and running until Thursday, April 27. The three participation categories are under-fives, six to 12 years and 13 to 17 years and will see kids trying to catch the largest fish off the Beachport or Southend jetties, culminating in a presentation at the Beachport Hotel on Friday, April 28 where the best anglers will be awarded their prizes.
